Finances: What you need to know

Talking to a therapist about the cost of therapy can bring up some feelings, and often feels awkward, uncomfortable etc. AND it is so important to feel empowered with this knowledge before we begin a therapeutic relationship.

This page is here to help clarify any questions you might have regarding me, my practice, and what costs to expect when you choose to engage with me as a therapist.

Insurance

Prior to becoming a provider with insurance I can admit that I knew very little about how insurance worked. I didn't understand co-pays deductibles etc. and it led to me having to pay money that I wasn't really able to spend at the time. This next section is my attempt to mitigate some of the confusion and offer clarity regarding what you the client are receiving when you use Insurance.

Plans

Every person has an insurance plan that is based on your selection at the time you enrolled with the insurance company. Your plan details can often be found in your customer portal through the insurance company's Phone App or Website.

What is a deductible

Simply put, a deductible is an amount of money that you will have to pay BEFORE you begin receiving lower cost co-pays/ benefits. Deductibles can range from $500 to above $5,000, this is based on the plan that you have selected. This means that until you have paid the insurance company the $500 you will be responsible for paying the contracted rate established by the insurance company.

Example: A  person is seeking a therapist and their deductible is $500. The therapist has a contracted rate with the insurance company of $100. This means that this person will be responsible for paying the $100 until they meet the $500 deductible.

Out of Network Benefits

Based on the plan that you have chosen you may be able to choose a provider who is not necessarily in network with your insurance company and receive some benefit from your insurance. This can be found through your client portal on your insurance company's website or phone app.

Additional Note: As a therapist I am not responsible for any changes in rates, costs, or whether the insurance company accepts or denies your claim. These are all things that you as the client will be responsible for handling in the event that the cost is different that what you expected.
